August in Newport Coast reads like more of the same until you look at the calendar. The Conservancy's summer programming ends this month. Pelican Hill's al fresco season has a hard stop on September 22. A Crystal Cove is now a year past its opening rush, which changes what and when you should be ordering. The residents who get the most out of this stretch treat the next four weeks as a countdown, not a plateau.
What follows is the shape of a good late-August week if you already live up the hill, drawn from what's actually on the schedule right now.
The August calendar most neighbors don't read
The Crystal Cove Conservancy has been running a full summer program at the state park since June, and most of it winds down in the next few weeks. Family Art Days are held every Wednesday, inviting visitors of all ages to explore Crystal Cove State Park through hands-on art and science activities inspired by local wildlife, marine ecosystems, and conservation stories, with new activities introduced throughout the summer. That means if you took the kids in June, the station lineup this week is not the one you remember.
The bigger date is August 6. On June 18, July 2, and August 6, the Historic District beach between Cottage #1 and Cottage #13 becomes an open-air theater under the stars, free with no registration required, and guests are invited to bring blankets and low-back beach chairs for an evening of film, fresh popcorn, and family-friendly educational activities before the show. That August 6 screening is the last one on the schedule. There is no September equivalent.
Two other Conservancy programs still have August dates on the books:

If you have never done the walking tour, this is the month. It is free, and the docents who lead it are the reason the cottages are still standing.
What Pelican Hill is actually running until September 22
The resort is in the last stretch of its Summer Al Fresco season. The 15% offer on two-plus night stays runs through September 22, 2026. For residents, the more useful piece is what the resort has stood up for the summer that day guests and locals can access without a room key.
Bella Vista Pool is the reimagined summer retreat overlooking the coast, with personal Bella Vista Lounges offering shaded seating and attentive service, weekday Day Access for a poolside escape, and a Creative Kids Studio running themed activities for younger guests. The Coliseum cabanas are the more familiar option, and the resort has layered new programming on top of both this season.
Family activations this summer include the Creative Kids Studio, Cinema Under the Stars, poolside cabanas, and more. Cinema Under the Stars is worth noting because it is the resort mirror of the Conservancy's Movies on the Beach: same idea, different price tier, and it runs later into the season.
If you want the quieter version of a Pelican Hill afternoon, the Great Room Terrace afternoon tea offers freshly baked scones with preserves and citrus curd, savory bites, and delicate desserts paired with hand-selected teas. The Italian-inspired Summer Mercato is the retail piece worth walking through even if you are not buying anything. And for the golfers, the newly restored South Course is the reason to book a tee time this month rather than waiting.
A Crystal Cove, one year in
A Crystal Cove has been open long enough that the honeymoon menu has settled. Worth remembering how it got here: River Jetty Restaurant Group partners Joseph "McG" Nichol and Jordan Otterbein, who brought A Restaurant to prominence and later opened A Market and CdM restaurant, announced A Crystal Cove at 7864 E Coast Hwy at the Crystal Cove Shopping Center. The space was formerly occupied by Settebello Pizzeria.
The menu now leans on what the group already knows how to do. Executive chef Elvis Morales presents a modern-American menu including pastas, specialty cuts of meats, and seafood, with a Custom Mimosa Cart on weekends and live music every Sunday during brunch. There are plans to expand to Long Beach and Hollywood in the coming months, which makes the Newport Coast location the flagship for now.
Two practical notes for residents. Weekend brunch is the reservation to get, not dinner: the weekend brunch includes guest DJs on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and DJs also run Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. And the wine policy is unusually restrictive for the neighborhood. Corkage is $40 per bottle with a two-bottle maximum per reservation, on the pricier side, and the wine list is on the trimmer side. If you keep a cellar at home, that changes the math on where to bring your own.
The residents who complain that Newport Coast "has nothing new" are usually the ones who last checked the calendar in June. The July and August programs are different from what ran earlier in the summer.
The logistics locals figure out too late
A few things worth internalizing before Labor Day weekend, when the crowd from PCH makes all of this harder:
- Beachcomber parking. Parking at the Shake Shack is very limited, and all parking for the Historic District, the Park Store, the Beachcomber Café, and the cottages is across Pacific Coast Highway in the Los Trancos lot.
- The shuttle. The Beachcomber Café shuttle transports people from the Los Trancos lot to the loading area near the café, is free for persons with disabilities, and $1.50 each way for other passengers. Most residents drive to the Shake Shack lot, fail to find parking, and give up. Park at Los Trancos and take the shuttle.
- Tidepools. Tidepool viewing is best during a low tide, especially a negative low tide, and you should watch water and weather conditions carefully. Check the tide chart the night before, not the morning of.
- E-bikes. All roads and trails from the Moro Canyon area coastward are open to class-1 e-bikes, but all other trails on the inland side of Highway 1 are closed to e-bikes. Newport Coast households with a garage full of class-2 or class-3 bikes should know this before rangers do.
- Park close. The park closes at sunset, with the exception of the Historic District, which closes at 10 p.m.
None of this is on a plaque. The residents who use the park most treat these as house rules.
The errand loop, without the freeway
The daily-life piece of Newport Coast is anchored by the two Irvine Company centers and their tenants. Newport Coast Shopping Center functions as the social and retail heart for an elite coastal corridor including Turtle Ridge, Harbor View, Spyglass Hill, Bonita Canyon, and One Ford Road, and sits about a mile from Fashion Island and its roughly 13 million annual visitors. Pavilions grocery anchors the tenant mix, and the ample parking and EV charging make it the default stop when you do not want to deal with Fashion Island's traffic.
The Crystal Cove Shopping Center covers the other half of the loop. It combines casual coastal elegance with shopping, dining, and lifestyle services in an oceanfront setting, from upscale specialty shops to grocery quick stops. If you are running a Saturday that includes brunch, a tidepool walk with the kids, and a grocery pull, both centers plus the park sit inside a five-minute drive of each other.
Closing the season
The specific dates matter because they will not be here in October. August 6 is a one-night event. The Conservancy's guided programming largely ends when the summer schedule closes. Pelican Hill's summer activations wind down September 22. A Crystal Cove will still be open in the fall, but the DJ brunch is a warm-weather ritual, and the Cinema Under the Stars only works when the evenings are.
Use the calendar. That is the whole thesis.
